Admiral Marc Mitscher memorial marker in Hillsboro, WI

Marc Mitscher became Naval Aviator No. 33 on June 2, 1916 when the naval aviation program was in its infancy. In 1919 he was a pilot of one of the Curtiss NC Flying Boats in the Naval Transatlantic flight expedition. He assumed command of the U.S.S. Hornet at its commissioning in October 1941 and was the captain of the U.S.S. Hornet at the time of the Doolittle Raid and also the Battle of Midway.
