(Schneider) "early" Type 91 105mm howitzer in Neenah, WI

This howitzer was originally reported as a Japanese Type 91 105mm howitzer, to which it looks almost exactly alike. However the barrel markings are clearly of a French made Schneider 105mm. Also, the spade area of this howitzer is visibly different from the Type 91 as pointed out below. However, photos found on the internet of the Canon de 105 mle 1913 Schneider (that the Type 91 was based on) show a much longer barrel and different carriage details than the howitzer presented on this page. This "riddle" has now been explained ... this Neenah howitzer is one of 300 Type 91s made by Schneider and is called "an early Type 91" because of this.

Rear view - When comparing this photo with the comparable photo of the Menasha Type 91 howitzer it can be seen that Menasha Type 91 has many more rivets at the back of the spade areas. This difference is likely due to the Neenah gun being built earlier by Schneider in France; while the Menasha gun was built later by Osaka Arsenal in Japan. (photo by John Anderson)

Close up of top of barrel just ahead of breech - No. 8 is presumably the gun serial number. Compare markings in this photo with the comparable photo of the Menasha Type 91 howitzer. No carriage dataplate could be located on this howitzer. (photo by John Anderson)
