In 1941 U.S. Army decided they needed a bigger anti-tank gun than the M3 37mm. The M1 57mm was created based on the British 6-pdr. Gun variants were the M1 and M4 (with a muzzle brake). Carriage variants were the M1, M1A1, M1A2, M1A3, and M2.
