The U.S. Army adopted the M1 37mm anti-aircraft gun in the late 1930's. The first carriage was a M3 four-wheeled trailer with wheels on detachable axles. Although outclassed by the Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun the 37mm was never completely replaced during WW2. Gun variations were the M1, M1A1, and M1A2.
This gun was also used as a component of the armament of a variety of Multiple Gun Carriages, sometimes by itself, but most often in the company of two 0.50 machine guns (as with the two Manitowoc guns listed below)
