Only 63 of the 4.62 inch caliber smoothbore M1841 12-pounder field gun were manufactured. The 85 inch long bronze barrel was made by each Alger and Ames for the Union Army, and by Tregalgar Foundry for the Confederate Army. Some of these smoothbore barrels were modified with rifling.
